Raphael’s angels
 
In 1512 Raphael painted the Sistine Madonna. At the feet of the Madonna and child, leaning on the lower edge of the painting are two mischieveous angels. In the early 19th century these cherubs started their own careers. Not only were they painted on porcelain, used as decorative motifs for jewellery but they also found their way into scrapbooks, were made the subject of stitching pictures. Their careers last into the present day.
 
The two delightful little girls in the picture are clearly posed as to resemble Raphael’s cherubs. The composition is slightly different but that small oversight is more than balanced by their dreamy smiles. They must have had a proud father 🙂
 
The image dates to around 1890 and is probably of English origin. It is in good condition. Crudely mounted on board but that does not detract from the attractiveness of the image. I can not help but love it.
