A fine 19th-century albumen photograph depicting the Great Sphinx and the Pyramid of Khufu (Cheops) on the Giza Plateau, Egypt. The monumental structures appear partly encircled by sand, prior to extensive archaeological excavation in the early 20th century. In the foreground, a figure in traditional dress provides scale among the ruins.
The photograph bears the original negative number and caption in French in the lower margin:
“392 Pyramide de Cheops et Sphynx.”
This numbering and caption style is characteristic of the Zangaki Brothers, Greek photographers who worked extensively in Egypt producing views for the European and American tourist markets.
