Stereoview of Chippewa Indians, Deer Hunting, Whitney & Zimmerman, circa 1870
Two Ojibwe (Chippewa) men are shown in a winter forest setting, one standing in snowshoes with a rifle cradled in his arms, wearing a hooded blanket coat and sash, the other seated on an overturned birchbark canoe resting in the snow. Bare birch and hardwood trees fill the background, with additional gear visible hung on branches at right, suggesting a hunting camp. The printed mount caption identifies the subject as deer hunting.
The mount bears the printed imprint of Whitney & Zimmerman, Photographers, of St. Paul, Minnesota, with the series number 495 and caption "Chippewa Indian, Deer Hunting." The firm operated under this joint name only briefly, placing the view within a narrow production window.

Photographer Biography:
Joel Emmons Whitney (1822–1886) and Charles A. Zimmerman (1844–1909) operated jointly under the name Whitney & Zimmerman in Saint Paul, Minnesota, from 1870 to 1871, after which Zimmerman purchased Whitney's business outright.
Whitney had been one of the earliest photographers active in Saint Paul, and Zimmerman worked as his apprentice before the partnership was formed.
The firm is best known for an extensive series of stereoviews of Minnehaha Falls, produced in both summer and winter views.
Following the Dakota War of 1862, demand grew in Minnesota for photographic studies of Indigenous peoples of the region, a market these St. Paul studios actively supplied.Shipping Information: Shipping (worldwide): EUR 12 (registered). Shipping to the USA at risk of the buyer.
