Stereoview of Domestic Servants, Scrubbing the Steps, circa 1865
Hand-tinted stereoview depicting two young women in a staged domestic genre scene. One stands beside a stone balustrade wearing a cap, blue bodice, and white apron, resting her hand on a tray of food set atop the pedestal; the other kneels on a stone step scrubbing with a cloth, a bucket placed beside her. The setting is an arched stone doorway with a paneled door and Gothic-style ironwork, suggesting the entrance to a substantial house or institutional building.
The arch-topped mount and applied hand-coloring are typical of English tinted stereo card production of the 1860s, though no photographer's imprint is present to permit a firm attribution.
Photographer/publisher: Unknown
Period/date: circa 1865
Dimensions: 175 x 85 mm
Condition: Good; the mount shows overall yellowing and a small corner loss at the upper left edge, with a vertical band of surface staining and discoloration along the doorway and pilaster consistent with pigment migration from the hand-coloring process. Scattered light foxing is present across the image area, and the hand-applied tinting remains largely intact with only minor fading.
