Stereoview of Nîmes, Porte d'Auguste, "Provence et Languedoc" series, circa 1870

Stereoview of Nîmes, Porte d'Auguste, "Provence et Languedoc" series, circa 1870

A stereoview showing the Porte d'Auguste, the Roman city gate of Nîmes, viewed from the exterior with a section of later masonry and residential buildings rising directly above the ancient arches. An iron fence separates the ruin from the foreground street, and a small group of indistinct figures is visible near the base of the gate. The mount bears a printed caption reading "PROVENCE ET LANGUEDOC / No 153. / NIMES (Gard) / Porte d'Auguste."

The arched half-frame format, printed series title, and pale buff mount are consistent with commercial French topographical stereoview publishing of the third quarter of the 19th century, though the specific publisher of this numbered "Provence et Languedoc" series has not been identified.
