Stereoview of the Penitent Magdalene, Devotion, circa 1860
A hand-tinted stereoview on an arched-top mount showing a young woman posed as the penitent Magdalene, seated with a rosary and wooden cross, reading an open prayer book. Behind her, a crucifix and a skull rest atop a green-draped pedestal, standard attributes of the Magdalene iconography in devotional genre photography of the period. The applied color emphasizes the crimson and gold mantle over a pale blue underdress, set against a dark curtained backdrop.
