Stereoview, Staged Genre Tableau, Fireman with Victim at a Window, circa 1860

A stereoview presenting a staged genre tableau, showing a fireman rescuing a lady from a burning houset. Extensive hand-applied color washes in pink, pale blue and red cover much of the upper composition and appear intended to simulate drapery, smoke or spattered blood, though the heavy and uneven application obscures much of the underlying photographic detail. The composition suggests a theatrical or melodramatic re-enactment of a violent scene, a genre common to contrived narrative stereoviews of the period.
