Stereoview, The Disturber of the Peace, Hand-Tinted Genre Scene, circa 1860

Stereoview, The Disturber of the Peace, Hand-Tinted Genre Scene, circa 1860

A staged genre tableau showing a young man in a vest and broad-brimmed hat standing behind a seated woman, apparently removing an object—possibly an insect or leaf—from her hair as she reclines with eyes closed and head tilted back. The setting is a rustic exterior with a stone wall overgrown with ivy, a wooden door, and a woven basket resting on a fabric-draped stool; the number "339" is inscribed near the woman's skirt. The image has been hand-colored in muted blues, pinks, and yellows, typical of mid-nineteenth-century staged stereo genre scenes intended for comic or sentimental effect.

The arched-top albumen mount and the printed caption set within a decorative border on the verso are consistent with commercially produced genre stereoviews of the period, though no publisher's imprint is present to confirm attribution.

Photographer/publisher: Unknown

Period/date: circa 1855-1865

Dimensions: 175 x 85 mm

Condition: Good; overall toning and yellowing of the mount, scattered light foxing, and minor edge and corner wear. The applied hand-coloring shows some unevenness and slight pigment bleeding, particularly in the pink drapery, consistent with period hand-tinting technique rather than later damage. The image surface is stable with no significant tears or losses.

Reverse: Printed caption within a decorative rectangular border reading: "THE DISTURBER OF THE PEACE." No publisher's imprint or additional inscription present.

Keywords: genre scene, hand-tinted, stereoview, Victorian era, staged tableau
