Tissueview of Two Devils with Skull, Hand-colored Theatrical Scene, circa 1860
A hand-colored stereoview presenting a staged, theatrical composition of two seated figures costumed as devils, each wearing horns and long dark wigs, one in red and one in blue-grey attire trimmed with a wide yellow collar. Between them stands a small pedestal table topped with a human skull flanked by crossed pitchforks, while a carved lion or gargoyle mask rests on a low stool at their feet; a green curtain hangs at either side of the staged set. The applied color is opaque and stylized, characteristic of tissue-type stereo cards designed to be viewed with backlighting for added dramatic effect.
