Two Gentlemen Playing Chess, England, Photographer unknown, circa 1860
Title:
Two Gentlemen Playing Chess, England, Photographer unknown, circa 1860Description: an unusual and rare English stereoview card featuring two distinct scenes printed on front and back. On one side, two well-dressed gentlemen are shown deep in concentration as they play chess at a small table before tall curtained windows. On the reverse, the game has progressed to its conclusion: the gentleman on the right gestures in apparent victory while his opponent concedes defeat by holding out captured pieces. This dual-sided format is especially uncommon for the period. The images are crisply detailed and finely composed, showing the refinement and social rituals of Victorian England.
